Mens mental health month

It is mens mental health month in the UK, and i believe that everyone’s mental health is important. So i wanted to do a specific post about mens mental health and also providing some website links and numbers for men specific helplines for any men out there who needs them.

First I would like that to say that if you a man, and you are struggling with mental health, know this. You matter, and your mental health matters, and its important that you have someone that you can confide in

Within the aspects of BPD men are statistically underdiagnosed. Men with BPD are more likely to externalze their distress. This can include heightened aggression, explosive temperaments, and risky behaviour (this does not mean that they are more dangerous, a lot of the times, people with BPD are more of a danger to themselves then they are other people.) Men are more prone to substance use disorders, and men are more likely to be diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder rather first before being diagnosed with BPD. It’s really important to recognise that there is a gender bias when it comes to BPD. Usually men are diagnosed with BPD after having treatment for other issues such as alcohol issues. Part of this, is the cultural expectations for men to be self reliant and not to talk about their mental health as much. Which can discourage a lot of men to talk about their problems. As someone who has brothers, uncles and a male partner, I’ve seen them have struggles with mental health, and seen them struggle to open up. We need to create room where men who do struggle with these things, can open up. It’s also important to tackle the gender bias that is present in the mental health system.

For anyone that have men in their life, let them know that they can open up, and give them space to do so. It’s important that everyone has space to express how they are feeling.
